As a Lean practitioner I am always speaking with my colleagues about how Lean is a journey and that this journey with it’s highs and lows is never ending. We have our ‘True North’ which is what we are working towards but we do not have a concrete date or destination at which we need to be at or a timeframe to adhere to as the road is long and nobody knows what the future holds or what the Lean path will bring.

Treating every change we make in our personal and professional lives as a journey allows us to enjoy the process of change without the stress and anxiety of constantly thinking about the destination. Of course we need to know where we are going and more importantly why we are going in that direction, however the more we focus on the journey the less stressful change will be and the more we allow ourselves to enjoy the process of change.

I love this way of looking at change and use the analogy of a journey for all change in my professional and personal life.

There is a Chinese proverb that says ‘ The journey is the reward’ – this is something I keep in mind when I am enjoying the journey of change and even more so when I am finding the journey of change challenging.

Pinky in the image above is at the start of his journey of change, he feels a little nervous as he is unable to see the destination along his chosen path. The best thing he can do next is to take the first step and continue making progress step by step allowing himself time and space to enjoy the journey even though he can’t see his final destination.

IMAGINATION

Walt Disney and the hugely successful brand he built is synonymous with the word imagination. It is in the imagination of Walt and those who followed in his footsteps that our favourite characters were dreamed of before they became a reality and burst onto our screens and into our lives.

Who ever thought a small mouse with a squeaky voice would be one of the most famous and most loved characters around the globe for decades? It truly is amazing what the imagination can bring to life when we focus on possibilities and not obstacles!!!

All change usually means doing something that hasn’t been done before and in order to bring about change we must first engage our most precious creativity tool – our imaginations.

Our imaginations are limitless, there is no end to what we can dream of or believe within our imaginations, just as there are no limits to what can be achieved in the real world where dreams become reality.  We can use our imaginations to dream of the change we wish to see, use our imaginations to feel how we want to feel when the change is implemented and to ponder on the thoughts of how we are going to achieve the change.

‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho, is one of the most widely read and successful books of all time. A parable about a young Andalusian shepherd, this remarkable book offers a wealth of wise lessons about life, the possibilities that lie within each of us and the importance of using our imaginations and following our dreams.

One of my favourite quotes  from ‘The Alchemist’ is the following

‘’When you want something, all the Universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Can you imagine that when we decide we want something an entire Universe will conspire to help us achieve it? We may find this hard to believe but an unwavering belief is exactly what is required to guarantee the success of what it is we want to achieve.

We must first believe that what is in our imagination is capable of becoming a reality. As suggested by the above quote, the Universe will then look after the finer details!!

In the image above, Pinky dreams of being with his loved ones on a sunny day, a very simple dream filled with immense happiness. Our dreams don’t have to be grand visions but they do need to resonate totally with ourselves.

Are you using your imagination to it’s fullest potential to dream about the change you want to see in your life and business?

Are you allowing your imagination to run wild and dream bigger than you ever thought possible?

HONESTY

If we want to implement and sustain change of any kind in our lives, we need to be honest with the world and our place in it.

In order to be honest with the world around us, we first need to be honest with ourselves.  

This honesty requires us to look deep into ourselves to figure out who we are, what our values are, what we want from our precious lives, what type of lives we want to live, what direction we are going in and where we ultimately want our destination to be.

Along the journey of effective change, there are decisions to be made, these decisions will determine how successful and sustainable the changes we make will be.

In order to make the right decisions we need to be honest about why we are changing and exactly where we want to be when these changes have been implemented

This level of self-honesty takes continuous bravery and for us mere mortals this bravery is a lifelong work in progress.

When we become completely honest with ourselves, we can become completely honest with the world. The path to effective change will then become enjoyable and peaceful and doors will begin to open for us to infinite possibilities.

GRATITUDE

One of my favourite quotes is from the legendary entrepreneur Jim Rohn,

Enjoy all you have while pursuing all you want’

It’s natural for us all to have hopes and dreams and work hard towards these hopes and dreams. However, while pursuing all we want it is really important to be aware of and immensely grateful for all we have in this very present moment.

On working towards our hopes and dreams it is helpful to take stock of and be grateful for the blessings each and every one of us have in our lives, for everything we are, for those who share our lives, for where we are and where we are going.

When we are making changes to get to a better place in life, work, business or relationships, being grateful for where we are here and now will bring peace to any situation and will ensure our eye stays on the future goal but that we remain present and content in the current situation.

Tony Robbins, in his book ‘Master The Game’ , suggests that real wealth comes from gratitude. I totally agree with this concept – how can we be happy with more if we are not happy with what we already have?

In her hugely successful book ‘The Secret, Rhonda Byrne tells us that ‘feeling gratitude is the fastest way to change every single thing in your life.’ The concept of using the simplicity of gratitude to transform your entire life is what ‘The Secret’ is based on and is so true to it’s teachings.

The more grateful we are the more peaceful a situation becomes and the smoother the path of change will be.

THE A-Z OF EFFECTIVE CHANGE – FAITH

Faith can have many different meanings.

To some people it can mean an inner faith, an unwavering belief in yourself, in your talents, in your ability to change, in your ability to support others through change, in your gifts, attributes and all round goodness.

To some people it can mean a belief in something bigger than yourself, a purpose, a grand vision, a dharma, a religion, the universe.

No matter what faith means to you, whether it be an inner or outer faith that guides you, along the path of change your faith will be tested and challenged.

Your faith will be tested and challenged by external factors of which are infinite, your faith will be tested by life itself, by those you surround yourself with and your faith will even be tested and challenged by yourself.

Will this work? Is this the right change for me? am I doing the right thing? What if I didn’t change? All the doubting questions we ask ourselves will test even the strongest of faiths.

So, how do we make it to the other side of change?

Ensure you keep the faith, whatever faith you believe in. Know that you are capable of change, have faith in yourself, your capabilities, your resilience, your tenacity, your reasons for change and the results you want to achieve.

It’s easy to keep faith through good times, it is through the difficult and rough times that your faith will really be tested and it is then that you must believe and have faith in yourself even when no-one else has that faith in you or what you are doing.

Keeping your faith alive and strong will ensure you stay true to yourself and the change you envision.

THE A-Z OF EFFECTIVE CHANGE – ENERGY

Whether your journey of change spans minutes or a lifetime, you will need sufficient energy to stay the course.

Keeping your mental, physical, emotional and spiritual energy levels at a premium will ensure you have the strength and tenacity required for change.

Knowing where you get your energy from and ensuring you schedule time in your day to recharge and build your energy levels will go a long way to assist you on your journey of change.

Whether it is 60 minutes at the gym, 30 minutes reading, 10 minutes of meditation, 6 quick pints or 5 minutes of solitude, make sure you schedule time for whatever you need to keep those energy levels at an optimum.

In this fast paced digital world we may think that we need to have high energy all the time to keep up with the many demands of our busy lives.

Having high energy is important, however having low energy is just as important and both are required to create a balance in our energy levels.

As humans our energy levels are cyclical, as the seasons of nature evolve into each other, as night follows day and as the tides flow and ebb, each phase allows the other to co-exist and both are equally necessary and of equal importance.

Being in a low energy phase will allow you to rest and recuperate and prepare for the high energy times ahead. Allow yourself to take the foot off the pedal, be kind to yourself and relax into the low energy phase. Allow yourself to just be and enjoy the deep feeling of contentment that this can bring.  It will serve you well when the time for high energy reappears.

Sustainable and effective change is a journey and in most circumstances it is a never ending journey.

That is why dedication is so important.

To ensure change is implemented you must be dedicated to it.

Dedication will keep you going when times get tough as they inevitably will.

This may sound like hard work, and  yes it is, that is exactly what is required to create and sustain effective change.

So how do you ensure you are dedicated to change? What will keep you going when the road gets bumpy and times get tough?

Knowing why you are changing and continuously revisiting this reason for change will ensure you stay on the path and stay dedicated to realise the change you envision.

Simon Sinek’s ‘Start With Why’ Ted Talk has had over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

In this popular video Simon talks about starting with your ‘Why’ when you are doing something. It is one of my favourite Ted talks and is absolutely worth a watch. ‘Why’ makes sense as a good place to start anything!

Life will get in the way, you will get in your own way, others will get in your way.

Keep going, keep your reasons for change at the front of your mind, keep working hard.

Just like Pinky in the image above, your path to change may be tough and long but keep going, you never know how close you are to that breakthrough!

THE A-Z OF EFFECTIVE CHANGE – CONFIDENCE

When you have decided to create change in your life you will need bucket loads of inner confidence to implement and stay the course through the journey of change. 

As humans, change often brings us feelings of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. Continuously building your inner confidence will diminish and alleviate these feelings of uncertainty, fear and anxiety.

As you build your inner confidence, you will inspire others to have confidence in themselves as they navigate their ever-evolving path to effective change.

As you build your inner confidence, you will make better decisions and will feel more at ease with these decisions. Because of your inner confidence these decisions will be based on a personal inner knowing and not fazed or swayed by any external circumstances.

Most change happens outside of your comfort zone which can be a scary place to go. Inner confidence will help you make the journey outside of your comfort zone and will support you to stay there long enough to implement and sustain change. The boundaries of your comfort zone will then expand making even more change possible.

As we know change of any sort may not be easy and sustainable change is the most challenging and difficult change of all.

Whether the change you are making is personal or professional, whether it is big or small, whether is it something you wished for or not wished for, all change requires bravery on some level.

Bravery is required in deciding to change.

Bravery is required in taking action to change.

Bravery is required in continuing with the consistent actions required to make change.

Bravery is required in becoming comfortable with the results of change.

Bravery is required in sustaining change for the long term.

When it comes to change, take a deep breath, be brave and take the next step forward.

Just like Pinky in the image above taking a brave step into the deep end, the deep end is almost never as deep as we think it is going to be.

This post is dedicated to my Dad, Con Danaher, who celebrates his birthday next week. My Dad is the bravest person I know and through his humble braveness he has taught me to be brave.
